White is timeless, but add punches of blue and sunny spots of yellow, and you create something entirely different — and happy!

Living Room
Designer Tom Stringer calls the rehab of this northern Michigan lake cottage Renovation-Lite, because he consciously avoided overhauling its charming eccentricities. A coffee table designed by Stringer holds stacks of old National Geographics. "They added the perfect yellow punch. They're so classic — just like blue and white. But we also knew they'd be great rainy-day reading," he says. Throughout the house, walls, trim, and ceiling are Benjamin Moore's White Dove.

Living Room
Close by the living room fireplace, wicker chairs from Mainly Baskets and a Baker round table, lacquered glossy white, provide a cozy spot for gin rummy. Original cabinets on either side of the hearth were refitted to hold a TV and audio/video equipment. Paisley cushion fabric is Ralph Lauren. Wool rug is Pottery Barn.

Cabinet
Original dining room china cabinets hold a casual mishmash of dishes and vases. "None of it's precious," says Stringer.

Kitchen
The breakfast area in the kitchen was given a face-lift with lacquered fabric roller shades in a Jane Churchill stripe and a bunch of throw pillows in Brunschwig & Fils' Montbard Linen in Lemon and Osborne & Little's Peaweed. Stringer preserved the kitchen's vintage blue laminate counters but replaced 1950s hardware with painted wood knobs.

Master Bedroom
The master bedroom's chandelier, hanging for decades in this same spot, was freshened with paint. The four-poster bed's headboard is in Ralph Lauren's Coastal Stripe in Yellow & White. The homeowner's stools were painted bright white, then reupholstered in Raoul Textiles' Chunari in Blue Willow.

Sitting Area
In a quiet corner of a guest bedroom, a telescope is set up to watch the stars. The chair and ottoman are covered in Decorators Walk's Epingle Stripe and the round side table came from Pottery Barn.
